1.Weseeawomanswimmingatnightinadarksea.
Suddenlysheispulledandwater.Shesurfaces,criesinfear,then
disappearsforever.Thisistheopeningscenefromthe1975film
Jaws,showingasharkattack.Ittellsthestoryofagreatwhite
sharkthatattacksandkillsswimmers.Jawswasagreatsuccess,
attractinghugeaudiencesandwinningmanyawards.It
strengthenedpeopleslong-heldideaofthegreatwhitesharkas
adangerousanimal.
2.Peoplehavealwaysbeenscaredofsharks,butJawsmade
thingsworse.Itmadepeoplefrightenedofsharks,especiallyof
thegreatwhiteshark.Manypeoplewhosawthefilmstartedto
believethatsharkswerebadanimalsthatatehumans.Some
peoplestoppedswimminginthesea,afraidofthehorrible
creaturefromthefilm.Otherpeoplestartedfishingforsharks,
killingasmanyastheycould.Atthattime,nobodycaredifsharks
werekilledorhowmanywerekilled?Peoplejustwantedthem
killed.
3.After1975,thenumberoflargesharksaroundAfricafell
quickly,andsoonfellaroundtheworld.Thiswasnotonlydueto
fearofsharks,but
alsofinning.Finningisatypeoffishingwheresharksare
caughtandtheirfinscutoff.Thesharksarethrownbackintothe
seawheretheydieslowlyandpainfully.Thefinsareusedinshark
finsoup.Finningkillsmillionsofsharksayear.
4.FinningwouldhaveanunexpectedeffectuponPeter

on.In1980Benchleywasdivingwhenhecameacrossanawful
