In1980,hewasinchargeofthedesignofJ-8Ⅱ,whichwasrequiredtoperformatamuchhigherlevelthanpreviousaircraft.Infouryears,GusteamachievedthefirstflightoftheJ-8Ⅱ,layingthecornerstone（基石）forChinassupersonicaircraftdesign.
