OVERVIEWCholecystitis,acommonconditionusuallyresultingfromcomplicationsofcholelithiasis,kɑl?l?θa??s?s],occursintwoforms,acuteandchronic.2

Acutecholecystitisrequiresurgentintervention,typicallywithantibioticsfollowedbycholecystectomy[k?l?s?s‘tekt?m?].Inthesettingofacutecholecystitis,cholecystectomyisoptimallyperformedsoonafterthediagnosisismade.Ifurgentcholecystectomyisnotfeasible,operationcanbedelayeduntilaftertheacuteepisodehasresolved,andthentheoperationmaybeperformedelectively,providedthattheacuteprocesscanbecontrolled,andthesymptomsresolve[r?’z?lv].3

Chroniccholecystitisisthemanifestationofongoing,intermittentinflammationorso-calledbiliarycolic.Patientswiththisconditionbenefitsymptomaticallyfromelectivecholecystectomy.Alesscommonversionofcholecystitisisacuteacalculouscholecystitis,whichoccursmostoftenincriticallyillpatients.Althoughgallstonesare,bydefinition,absentinthiscondition,cholecystectomyspecimensinpatientswithacuteacalculouscholecystitisoftenrevealbiliarysludge.4
