pilotplantforbatteryrecyclingattheHamburgsite.cobalt,manganese,andgraphitefromso-calledblack
Batteryrecyclingwillgainsubstantialimportanceinmassinahydrometallurgicalprocess.Blackmassisa
theyearstocomesincethepushfore-mobilitywillpowderymaterialthatformswhenbatterymodules
continue,causingdemandforlithium-ionbatteriesandbatterycellsaremechanicallyrecycled.Thenext
andrawmaterialsfortheirproductiontoriserapidly.stepafterthepilotplantisafeasibilitystudy.Thegoal:
Recyclingcancountertheexpectedshortageofinthenextfiveyears,Aurubiswantstocommissionan
valuablemetalsandfulfillthegrowingdemand.Theindustrial-scalebatteryrecyclingplant.
Batteryrecyclingasasustainabledriverofgrowth
RecyclingisastrategicgrowthfactorforAurubis–andbatteryrecyclingplaysakeyroleinthisregard.Aurubis
developedaspecialprocesstorecovermetalsfromblackmassandregistereditforapatent.Thecompanyplansa
€200millioninvestmentforanindustrial-scalebatteryrecyclingplant,whichwillcontributetoanincreaseinthe
recyclingrateandtothesupplyofcrucialmetals.Aurubiswillintegratethisplantintoitsownsmelternetworkin
ordertorecoverandfurtherprocessexceptionallyhighyieldsofsignificantbatterymetalssuchaslithium,nickel,
cobalt,manganese,andgraphite.Thisclosesthecycleforlithium-ionbatteries.Aurubisthereforemakesanimportant
contributiontosecuringthesustainablesupplyofrawmaterials.Theresponsibleapproachtoresourcesandthegoal
