Foreword
TheNationalOccupationalHealthandSafetyCommission(NOHSC)leadsandcoordinates
nationaleffortstopreventworkplacedeaths,injuryanddiseaseinAustralia.Throughthe
qualityandrelevanceoftheinformationitprovides,theNOHSCseekstoinfluencethe
awarenessandactivitiesofeveryandorganisationwitharoleinimprovingAustralia’s
occupationalhealthandsafety(OHS)performance.
Morespecifically,theNOHSCaimsto:
•supportandenhancetheeffortsoftheCommonwealth,stateandterritorygovernments
toimprovethepreventionofworkplacedeaths,injuryanddisease;
•workinallianceswithotherstofacilitatethedevelopmentandimplementationof
betterpreventativeapproaches;and
•ensuretheneedsofsmallbusinessareintegratedintotheseapproaches.
TheNOHSC’sNationalOHSStrategy2002-2012,whichwasreleasedbytheWorkplace
RelationsMinisters’Councilon24May2002,recordsacommitmentbyallAustralian,state
andterritorygovernments,theAustralianChamberofCommerceandIndustryandthe
AustralianCouncilofTradeUnionstosharetheresponsibilityofensuringthatAustralia’s
performanceinwork-relatedhealthandsafetyiscontinuouslyimproved.
TheNationalOHSStrategysetsoutfivenationalprioritiestoachieveshort-termandlong-
termimprovements.
Theprioritiesareto:
•reducehighincidenceandhighseverityrisks;
•improvethecapacityofbusinessoperatorsandworkerstomanageOHSeffectively;
•preventoccupationaldiseasemoreeffectively;
•eliminatehazardsatthedesignstage;and
•strengthenthecapacityofgovernmenttoinfluenceOHSoutcomes.
NationalstandardsaredeclaredbytheNOHSCunders.38(1)oftheNationalOccupational
HealthandSafetyCommissionAct
