Theamountofavailablein-processstoragespacealsoimposesalimitationonthe
productionratesofthenewproduct.Plants1,2,and3have13,000,12,000,and5,000
squarefeet,respectively,ofin-processstoragespaceavailableforadaysproductionof
thisproduct.Eachunitofthelarge,medium,andsmallsizesproducedperdayrequires
20,15,and12squarefeet,respectively.
Salesforecastsindicatethatifavailable,900,1,200,and750unitsofthelarge,
medium,andsmallsizes,respectively,wouldbesoldperday.
Ateachplant,someemployeeswillneedtobelaidoffunlessmostoftheplant’s
excessproductioncapacitycanbeusedtoproducethenewproduct.Toavoidlayoffsif
possible,managementhasdecidedthattheplantsshouldusethesamepercentageoftheir
excesscapacitytoproducethenewproduct.
Managementwishestoknowhowmuchofeachofthesizesshouldbeproduced
byeachoftheplantstoizeprofit.
