Abstract:TheChinesemelaminemilkrecallandaseriesofproductharmscandalsrangingfrommilkpowdertochocolatebarindicatethatfirmsandconsumersalikearevulnerabletoqualityrisksinaglobalsupplychain.Supplychainsareextendedbyoutsourcingandstretchedbyglobalization,whichgreatlyincreasethecomplexityofsupplynetworkanddecreasethevisibilityinriskandoperationprocess.Itishardforfirmstomanagetheproductqualityofsuchamulti-layersupplychainwhichhasalowtraceabilityofmaterialorigin.Inthispaper,wearguethatbettervisibilityofriskinsupplychaincouldminimizethethreatofproductharm.Asupplychainproductqualityriskmanagementframework,integratingboththeincrementalcalculusandmarginalanalysis,isproposed.Casestudyresultsindicatethattheproposedapproachhasthefollowingbenefits:(i)providingevaluationoftheproductqualityriskinsupplychainlayers;(ii)allowanceforfirmstohaveabetter‘visibility’ofproductqualityrisksinsupplychain;and(iii)atraceablejustificationpathformulti-sourcingdecision.Keywords:Supplychainrisk,Supplychain,visibility,Qualitycost,Multi-sourcing
