TheIronBridge,spanningtheSevernriverinShropshire,England,isntaparticularlylargeorornatebridge,butitdoeshavesomethingthatmadeitunique:itsthefirstbridgemadecompletelyoutofcastiron.
Inthe18thcentury,Shropshirewasrichinironandcoal-indeed,thereweremoreironfactorieswithintwo-mileradiusofthetownthananyothercityintheworld.Itwasalsotherethatironwasfirstsmeltwithcoke.Soitwasonlynaturalthatthebridgewouldbemadeoutofiron,astrongeralternativetowood.(Photooftherailing:Architect ThomasFarnollsPritchardproposedasinglearchbridgethatwouldletboatspassunderneath,buthediedbeforethebridgewasbuilt.TheconstructionoftheIronBridgewascarriedoutbyalocalmasterironworkernamedAbrahamDarbyIII.About400tons(363tonnes)ofcastironwasused,withabout800separatecastings.TheIronBridgehas5archribs,eachcastintwohalves.Itonlytookthreemonthstoputthepartstogether(whichtheydidusingscrewsinsteadofbolts!).
