2InNorthAmericaandEurope，croplandthathada32%annualchanceofaflashdroughtafewyearsagocouldhaveagreaterchanceofaflashdroughtbythefinaldecadesofthiscentury.Thatresultwouldputfoodproduction，energy，andwatersuppliesunderincreasingpressure.Thecostofravagewillalsorise.AflashdroughtintheDakotasandMontanain2017caused$2.6billioninagriculturaldamageinAmericaalone.

3Alldroughtsbeginwhenrainfallstops.What‘sinterestingaboutflashdroughtsishowfasttheyreinforce（加強）themselves，withsomehelpfromthewarmingclimate.Whentheweatherishotanddry，soillosesmoisturerapidly.Dryairextractsmoisturefromtheland，andrisingtemperaturescanincreasethisevaporative（蒸发的）demand.Thelackofrainduringaflashdroughtcanfurthercontributetothefeedbackprocesses.Undertheseconditions，cropsandvegetationbegintodiemuchmorequicklythantheydoduringtypicallongtermdroughts.

4Inourstudy，weusedclimatemodelsanddatafromthepast170yearstoassessthedroughtrisksaheadunderthreeconditionsforhowquicklytheworldtakesactiontoslowthepaceofglobalwarming.Ifgreenhousegasemissionsfromvehicles，powerplants，andotherhumansourcescontinueatahighrate，wefoundthatcroplandinmuchofNorthAmericaandEuropewouldhavea53%annualchanceofflashdroughts，respectively，bythefinaldecadesofthiscentury.Globally，thelargestprojectedincreasesinflashdroug
