Ifyouhaveoffice2007installedonVista,OpticalCharacterRecognition(OCR)isnoweasierthanyouthink.
IrecentlywenttoatrainingseminarinordertolearnhowtouseMicrosoftOffice2007.Itsagreatpackage,butwhatreallyimpressedmywasitscapabilitytoturnimagesintotextwithalmostnoeffort.
ThistechniqueisknownasOpticalCharacterRecognition(OCR),andithasbeenunderdevelopmentfordecades.Finally,itisaccurateandeasytouse.
IveneverincludedOCRcapabilitiesinsoftwareuntilnow.Themainreasonwasbecauseofitsinaccuracy.Itriedseveralpackagesintheearly90s.Aftercarefullyconvertingscannedpagesintotextandthencorrectingtheerrors,Ifoundthatitwasfastertojusttypethecontentthantoconvertandcorrectit.
AnothersmalldetailintheearlydaysofOCRwasthecostofthirdpartylibraries.Mostofthemcameatahighprice,usuallymorethan$500.Forme,knowingthatitwasfairlyinaccurateanyway,thatpricewastoohigh.Ifithadbeeninexpensive,ImighthavebeenwillingtoaddOCRasafeaturetosomeprojectsjustsoIdhaveanothermarketingbulletpoint.
IfyouhaveOffice2007installed,theOCRcomponentisavailableforyoutouse.TheonlydependencythatsaddedtoyoursoftwareisOffice2007.RequiringOffice2007tobeinstalledinorderforyoursoftwaretoworkmayormaynotfitasituation.ButifyourclientcanguaranteethatmachinesthatyoursoftwarewillrunonhaveOffice2007installed,youregold.Iveencounteredmanysituationswherethisisthecase.Iveevenencounteredafewsituationswhere clientswerewillingto installOffice2007inordertousemyapplications.
