wroteAnthonyTommasini,asober-sidedclassical-musiccritic.
2Oneofthereasonswhytheappointmentcameassuchasurprise,however,isthatGilbertis
comparativelylittleknown.EvenTommasini,whohadadvocatedGilbert’sappointmentinthe
Times,callshim“anunpretentiousmusicianwithnoairoftheformidableconductorabouthim.”As
adescriptionofthenextmusicdirectorofanorchestrathathashithertobeenledbymusicianslike
GustavMahlerandPierreBoulez,thatseemslikelytohavestruckatleastsomeTimesreadersas
faintpraise.

heperformsanimpressivevarietyofinterestingcompositions,butitisnotnecessaryformetovisit

missingthepoint.Forthetime,attention,andmoneyoftheart-lovingpublic,classical
instrumentalistsmustcompetenotonlywithoperahouses,dancetroupes,theatercompanies,and
museums,butalsowiththerecordedperformancesofthegreatclassicalmusiciansofthe20th
century.Theserecordingsarecheap,availableeverywhere,andveryoftenmuchhigherinartistic
