WhilestillastudentatHarvardMedicalSchoolinthe1980s,Paulandhiscolleaguesopenedaone-roomclinicinremoteCange,Haiti,wheretheynotonlycaredforlocals,buttrainedateamofhealthworkerstoservethesurroundingareas.Helivedthereinasimplehomewithconcretefloors,andnohotwater,notsodifferentfromtheadaptedbushegrewupinwithhisparentsinFlorida.

Withinafewyears,theclinicsworkgainedworldwidenoticeforbringingtuberculosis(肺结核)undercontrolinthearea.Today,PartnersinHealthoperates16healthinstitutionsinHaiti,andemploysalocalstaffofnearly7,000.Theyalsooperatein11othercountries,includingRwanda,wheretheypartneredwiththegovernmenttorebuildthenationshealthsystem.Millionsofpeopleareservedeveryyear,mostofwhomliveonlessthanafewdollarsaday.

ImhonoredtohaveworkedcloselywithPaul.For20years,Iwatchedhimmakeadifferenceinthepoorestplaces,eveninthefaceofdysfunctional(功能失调的)politicsandviolence.
