Inshort,peoplechosetoleavetheirhomesforsocial,economicandreligiousreasons.Asaresult,by1890amongatotalpopulationof63million,thereweremorethanninemillionforeign-bornAmericans.

Butwhatweretheattractions?Firstofall,therewasthepromiseoflandwhichwassoscarceinEurope.Next,factorieswerecallingforlabour,andpayandconditionsweremuchbetterthanbackhome.MenwereneededtoopenuptheWestandbuildthelongrailroads,andsettlerswereneededtopopulatenewtownsanddevelopcommerce.Therewasthespaceforreligiouscommunitiestopracticetheirfaithinpeace.

Asweknow,therewerelosers.Tostartwith,therewerethoseunwillingimmigrants,theslaveswhohadbeenusedasasourceofcheaplabour.NorshouldweforgettheequallyawfulfateoftheAmericanIndians.By1860therewere27millionfreewhites,fourmillionslavesandonly488,000freeblacks.

Nowadays,theUSAisstillseenbymillionsasthePromisedLand.Asalways,itremainsanattractiveplacetotheambitiousandtheenergeticwhoarereadytocommitthemselvestothelandthatgivesthemasecondchance.
