IstillrememberthefirstdayIwalkedintomyhighschoolEnglish
classandsawmyteacherstandingatthefrontoftheroom.Hewasa
tall,lankymanwithamopofcurlyhairandawarm,friendlysmile.
LittledidIknowthatthisunassumingfigurewouldgoontobecome
oneofthemostinfluentialandmemorableteachersIhaveeverhad.
Fromtheverybeginning,itwasclearthatthiswasnoordinary
Englishclass.Ourteacher,Mr.Smith,hadauniqueteachingstyle
thatcombinedhisdeepknowledgeofthesubjectmatterwitha
wickedsenseofhumor.Hewouldoftenstarttheclasswithajokeor
awittyobservationthatwouldimmediatelycaptureourattention
andsetthetoneforthelesson.
OneofthethingsthatmadeMr.Smithsoengagingwashisabilityto
makeeventhemostmundanetopicsinteresting.Whetherwewere
studyingShakespearessonnetsoranalyzingtheuseofmetaphorin
acontemporarynovel,hewouldfindawaytomakethematerial
comealive.Hewouldcrackjokes,actoutscenes,andeven
encourageustoparticipateinlivelydiscussions,allwhileensuring
thatwewerelearningthematerialinameaningfulway.
ButMr.Smithshumorwasntjustagimmick–itwasagenuinepart
ofhispersonality.Hewasgenuinelyfunny,withaquickwitanda
knackforseeingthehumorineventhemostserioussituations.He
wouldoftensharestoriesfromhisownlife,pokingfunathimself
andhisownfoibles,andencouragingustodothesame.
Oneofmyfavoritememoriesfromhisclasswaswhenwewere
studyingaparticularlycomplexpoem.Wewereallstrugglingto
understandthemeaningandsymbolism,andtheclasswasstarting
togetabittense.ButthenMr.Smithsteppedin,grabbedamarker,
andstarteddrawingsillycartoonsontheboardtoillustratethekey
points.Beforelong,theentireclasswaslaughingandthetension
hadmeltedaway.
