1Introduction

Automotivecybersecurityisbecomingincreasinglyimportant,especiallyintheageof

informationandconnectivityasvehicles’capabilitiesarebecomingmoreandmoreconnected.

Whileautomotivecybersecurityhasbeenaroundsincethe90’saspartoftheftprotection,

odometermanipulation,andchiptuning,itrecentlygainedanewlevelofattentionas

cybersecuritybreacheshavebeenshowntoimpactthesafetyofpassengerandcommercial

vehicles.Overthelastfiveyears,ithasbeenrepeatedlydemonstratedthatitispossibletohack

intopassengervehiclestomodifydrivingbehaviorortolocateandstealthevehicles.Such

attackshavebeendemonstratedbyresearchteamsthathackedbuilt-invehicleinterfaces,andthat

hackedintoOBD2(onboarddiagnostic)dongleswithwirelesscapabilitiesthatarepluggedinto

vehicles.Thenin2015thefirstresearchabouthackingcommercialvehicleswasreleasedtoshow

thatcommercialvehiclesarepronetosimilarvulnerabilitiesandcanpotentiallybecompromised.

Overthelastyears,manyprocessesandtechnologiesweredevelopedforautomotive

cybersecurity.Thischapterwillprovideabackgroundofpassengervehiclecybersecurityand

commercialvehiclecybersecurity,anddescribewhatthecommonalitiesare,howautomotive

cybersecuritysolutionscanbeappliedforcommercialvehicles,andwheretherearelimitations

anddifferences.Thechapterathandwillfocusontechnicalsolutionsonly,andwereferto

ChapterXXXforanoverviewoftheequallyimportantcybersecurityengineeringprocess.The
