Monetarypolicydecisions

TheGoverningCounciltodaydecidedtolowerthethreekeyECBinterestratesby25basispoints.

Basedonanupdatedassessmentoftheinflationoutlook,thedynamicsofunderlyinginflationandthe

strengthofmonetarypolicytransmission,itisnowappropriatetomoderatethedegreeofmonetary

policyrestrictionafterninemonthsofholdingratessteady.SincetheGoverningCouncilmeetingin

September2023,inflationhasfallenbymorethan2.5percentagepointsandtheinflationoutlookhas

improvedmarkedly.Underlyinginflationhasalsoeased,reinforcingthesignsthatpricepressures

haveweakened,andinflationexpectationshavedeclinedatallhorizons.Monetarypolicyhaskept

financingconditionsrestrictive.Bydampeningdemandandkeepinginflationexpectationswell

anchored,thishasmadeamajorcontributiontobringinginflationbackdown.

Atthesametime,despitetheprogressoverrecentquarters,domesticpricepressuresremainstrong

aswagegrowthiselevated,andinflationislikelytostayabovetargetwellintonextyear.Thelatest

Eurosystemstaffprojectionsforbothheadlineandcoreinflationhavebeenrevisedupfor2024and

2025comparedwiththeMarchprojections.Staffnowseeheadlineinflationaveraging2.5%in2024,

2.2%in2025and1.9%in2026.Forinflationexcludingenergyandfood,staffprojectanaverageof

2.8%in2024,2.2%in2025and2.0%in2026.Economicgrowthisexpectedtopickupto0.9%in

2024,1.4%in2025and1.6%in2026.

TheGoverningCouncilisdeterminedtoensurethatinflationreturnstoits2%medium-termtargetina

timelymanner.Itwillkeeppolicyratessufficientlyrestrictiveforaslongasnecessarytoachievethis

aim.TheGoverningCouncilwillcontinuetofollowadata-dependentandmeeting-by-meeting

approachtodeterminingtheappropriatelevelanddurationofrestriction.Inpar
