Abstract
ThisstudymakesanempiricalanalysisofTanzaniaOutwardForeignDirectInvestment(OFDI)andDomesticInvestment(DI)byassessingwhetherthereisapositiverelationshiprunningfromOFDItoDI.ItalsoevaluatesShortrunDIandOFDIandexamineifthereiscasualrelationship.Thestudywasguidedbythreequestionsnamely:WhetherthereisapositiverelationshiprunningfromOFDItoDIinTanzania?WhetherthereisacasualrelationshipaswellbetweenshortrunDIandOFDIofTanzania?AndTowhatextentdoesOFDIanddomesticinvestmentcontributetocountry’seconomy?Thestudyemployedaqualitativeresearchapproach.Dataforthepresentedstudywerecollectedfromthesampleof4respondents.TheseareofficialsfromTanzaniaInvestmentCenter(TIC),EconomistfromUniversityofDaresSalaam,Officialsfromfirmsthatextendedtheirfunctionsabroad,andOfficialsfromMinistryofIndustryandTrade.Therespondentswereselectedusingpurposivesamplingtechnique.Qualitativedatawerecodedandanalysedthematically.Afteranalysisthedatawerepresented,integrated,andinterpreted.ThestudyfoundthatthereisarobustnegativerelationshiprunningOFDItoDI.Also,withrespecttocausalrelationshipbetweenDIandOFDI,thestudyrevealsthatthereiscausalrelationshipsinceOFDIsubstituteDI.
Thestudyrecommendsamongothers,Tanzaniashouldenactandformulateappropriatepoliciesaddressinginvestmentchallenges.Thecountryalsoshouldadvanceinfrastructureparticularlypower,rail,roadandportsinordertomobilizetheavailableresources.ThegovernmentofTanzaniashouldincludeOFDIinnationaldevelopmentstrategy,anduseOFDIascatch-upmechanism
