TheClass628isa(semi)dieselmultipleunitconsistedoftwocarriages,onemotorcar(BR

628)andonecontrolcarwithoutpowersupply(BR928),developedintheearly1970s.

Originally,theBR628wereorderedtorecetheolderRailbusesClass795,798and515.

ThedevelopmentoftheBR628canbedividedinseveralstages.Thesecondversionofthis

class,theBR628-2,wasanextendedversionoftheprevioustwoversions.

Beforethedieselmultipleunitsbecamewidespread,anumberofshort-termrequirements

fromthefutureproductionClass628-2unitswereintegrated,ludinga1stclassopen

compartment,betterventilationandadividingwallbetweenthedriverscabandthe

passengercompartment.Externallythefrontandbackweremoreangled,thetriple

headlampwasmoveddownandatraindestinationdisyaddedinordertoimprovethe

vehiclesappearanceandtokeeppassengersbetterinformed.Inall,150oftheseunitswere

procuredbetween1986and1989.AttheKiellocomotivedepotseveraloftheserailcarswere

driverforawhileatupto140km/h,butbecausethisseriouslyreasedwearandtear,

theseexpressdutiesweresoonterminatedagain.TheClass628-2withtheDBs

RegionalbahninSchleswig-Holsteinwasgivenaredesignwithnewseats,newinteriordecor,

wheelchairrampsetc.Severalyearsbefore,aKarlsruhe628-2hadalsobeengivena

fundamentalmodernisationofitsinterior.

TheexperiencewiththeBR628-2leadtoanextendedversion,theBR628-4whichwere

morepowerfullandlonger.

TheClass628-2canbeoperatedinaumoffourpairsandhasaumspeedof

120kilometreperhour.Theweightofacarriageisaround42tons.
