I.SUMMARY
Extensivefieldtestdatahavebeenobtainedwhichcanserve
asabasisforevaluatingtheabilityofvariouslaboratorymethodsto
predicttheshearstabilityofmultigradecrankcaseoils.Thisbasis
wasdevelopedbydeterminingtheaverageviscositychangesofonesingle
gradeandtwelvemultigradereferenceoilsinsixseparatecarfleets.
Thetwelvemultigradeoilswereformulatedwithallofthechemicaltypes
ofVIimproverscurrentlyinuse,orlikelytobeused,inthenearfuture.
Asasecondpartoftheprogram,fourtypesofbenchtests
andthreedifferentlaboratoryenginetestswereevaluatedfortheir
abilitytopredicttheaverageviscositychangesofthethirteenrefer-
