PREFACE

TECHNICALRECOMMENDATIONSFORHIGHWAYS(TRH)arewrittenforthepractisingengineerand

describecurrent,recommendedpracticeinselectedaspectsofhighwayengineering.Theyarebasedon

SouthAfricanexperienceandtheresultsofresearchandhavethefullsupportoftheCommitteeofState

RoadAuthorities(CSRA).

Toconfirmitsvalidityinpractice,thepresentTRH9wascirculatedindraftformforatrialperiodbeforebeing

submittedtotheCSRAforfinalapproval,whichithasnowobtained.

SYNOPSIS

ThisTRHgivesguidanceonmethodsofroadembankmentconstructionwhichhaveprovedsuccessfulin

SouthAfrica.Itisemphasizedthatasoundconstructionistheoutcomeofaninvestigationanddesign

processwhichshouldhavetakenaccountofanyspecialconditionsatthesiteconcerned.This,however,is

notalwayspossibleorpredictableanditisthereforeessentialthattheconstructionagencyshouldappreciate

theproblemswhichmayhavetobedealtwith.Aflexibleapproachisrecommendedandthisdocument

thereforedeliberatelyavoidslayingdownspecificationsforconstruction.
