We all now what it is like to want to win and most of us know what it is like to lose.
More often than not, winning has the victor walking on air, lost in the glory of the moment, while the loser
is left with a bitter taste and a feeling of failure.
Whether you come first or last, it is important to remember that at any sporting event, you face two
opponents: your fellow competitors and yourself.
Step 2 Reading
Activity 1 Look through the three questions and read the article, preparing to answer them.
Why does the author say “at any sporting event, you face two opponents”?
Why was Monti awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Trophy?
Would you do the same if you were Monti? Why or why not?
