PRE-ALGEBRA ALGEBRA I Problem Solving and Graphing Carol J. Smith Instructor of Mathematics Lehigh Carbon Community College Videoconference King of Prussia, PA April 5, 2006 Overview Pre-Algebra through Algebra I We will start by exploring Integers, order of operations and the basic properties of Algebra. The focus will be primarily on linear equations and functions. We will look at a variety of techniques including manipulatives to demonstrate how to solve linear equations involving decimals, fractions, and integers. Applications of linear equations will be discussed and a problem solving process will be developed. Problems will include a variety of algebraic concepts and will be solved using critical thinking skills as well as algebraic skills. We will also explore graphs of linear functions. In addition we will look at polynomials and their graphs. Agenda 1. Concepts of Elementary Algebra a. Integers b. Order of Operations c. Properties of Algebra 2. Operations with Polynomials a. Functions Integers Charged Particles Directions: Use the dark chips to represent protons (positive numbers) and the light chips to represent electrons (negative numbers). Use the chips to model each problem and find the answer. 1. 3 + 2 = 2. -4 + (-1) = 3. -3 + 4 = 4
