Birmingham (Britain’s 2nd largest city) During the Industrial Revolution, Birmingham and the surrounding area of the West Midlands developed into the country’s major engineering center. Glasgow (the 3rd largest city in Britain) It is associated with heavy industry and some of the worst housing conditions in Britain. However, Glasgow has a strong artistic heritage. In 1990, it was the European city of culture. Glasgow has received many immigrants from Ireland, and in some ways it reflects the divisions in the community that exist in Northern Ireland. 4. Edinburgh Edinburgh is half the size of Glasgow, and it has a comparatively middle-class image. It is the capital city of Scotland and is associated with scholarship, the law and administration. This reputation, together with its many fine historic buildings, and also perhaps its terrain (there is a rock in the middle of the city on which stands the castle) has led to its being called “the Athens of the north”. The annual Edinburgh Festival of the arts is internationally famous. 5. Cardiff The capital city of Wales is the youngest capital in Europe since 1955, with over 330 parks and gardens, Cardiff is also among the UKs greenest cities. 6. Belfast Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, is known all over the world for one important reason—the trouble. Bombs, bullets and violence were once?commonplace and there was a visible?heavy police and army presence on the streets.?However, since the ceasefires in 1994, the city has regenerated itself with?new hotels, shops, bars and restaurants to become a lively, exciting, and friendly city.
