Factors affecting t oughness of H SS have been studied. T he result showed that the toughness of H SS is influenced by chemical compositions, steelmaking methods, inclusions, carbides and heat treatment. The tough- ness increases under the condition of bet ter purity and few er inclusions and decreases w ith increasing C content for the same grade of steels. W-Mo type steels are better than W type in toughness. Distribut ion, grain size and shape of carbides are also important factors. The toughness of pow der metallurgy H SS is remarkably better than conven- tional HSS. Heat t reatment is also another import ant factor, and the toughness will decrease for higher hardening temperature and low er tempering temperature.
