The Beauty of Britain 1. What is the possible nationality of the author? The author may be British. * * Called by some “the last sage” of English literature, J. B. Priestley (1894-1984) had a career which spanned more than 60 years and included authoring novels, essays, plays, and screenplays. Before reading the text closely, scan to find the answers to the following 5 questions. 2. In what tone does the author describe the sceneries of Britain? Approving. 3. What are the characteristics of the sceneries of Britain? Superb variety and exquisite moderation. 4. What kind of feelings does this variety produce to people? The variety is astonishing and full of happy surprise to people. 5. What does the author mean by “exquisite moderation”? A compromise between wildness and tameness, between Nature and Man. Para. 1 The beauty of our country — or at least all of its south of ______ — is as hard to define as it is easy to enjoy. North Scotland The North of Scottland is the Highlands, a montainious region. Its features are a result of periods of glaciations, the most recent of which ended some 1,5000 years ago. The central, and most visited, part of the area is called the Lake District National Park which was designated as a National Park in 1951. It is the second largest of the fourteen National Parks in Britain. The Lake District is intimately associated with English literature in the 18th and 19th centuries. W
