Abstract
As the rapid development of wireless communications, there are two challenges that should be resolved. On one hand, the energy consumption of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has drawn universal attention, which both burdens the electrical bill of network operators and has a negative effect on the global environment by
CO2
emissions. On the other hand, among all performance metrics of wireless network
service, QoS (Quality of Service) guarantee is the most important one as it is directly related to users’ experience. However, as new services emerge and the demand of traditional service increases, the QoS guarantee is becoming increasingly complicated. Hence, how to meet the QoS of real-time multimedia while avoiding the service starvation of non-real time service is another challenge in wireless communication networks.
In 4G mobile communication networks, the combination of MIMO (Multi-Input and Multi-Output) and OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technologies can effectively improve the system transmission rate and reduce the effect of multipath fading. In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency optimization in MIMO-OFDM communication systems while considering QoS constraints. The main contributions of our work is summarized as follows:
Firstly, we investigate the characteristics of data transmission and energy consumption in MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems for the system energy efficiency modeling and QoS bit error rate modeling. Based on the system energy efficiency model, a two-threshold power allocation algorithm is proposed in this paper in order to optimize system energy efficiency with the bit error rate constraint.
Furthermore, considering the characteristics of data transmission in practical communication networks, we use effective capacity as the system out with statistical QoS constraint to optimize the energy efficiency model. Based on this energy efficiency model, an energy-ef
