Outline A brief review on the plot Southern Gothic The suspenseful chronological order Unique narrative point of view---“we” Symbolism William Faulkner’s view on A Rose for Emily A brief review on the plot A Rose for Emily recounts the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, who controlled and manipulated her, and her lover, the Yankee road worker Homer Barron. When Homer Barron threatens to leave her, she is seen buying arsenic (砒霜), which the townspeople believe she will commit suicide with. After this, Homer Barron is not heard from again, and is assumed to have returned north. A brief review on the plot Though Emily does not commit suicide, the townspeople of Jefferson continue to gossip about her and her eccentricities, citing her familys history of mental illness. She is heard from less and less, and rarely ever leaves her home. The townspeople even don’t know that ,until her death,in her upstairs room she hides the corpse of Homer Barron, which explains the horrid stench that emits from Miss Emilys house. “A Rose for Emily” reveals the influence that Southern Gothic had on Faulkner’s writing: this particular story has a moody and forbidding atmosphere; a crumbling old mansion; and decay, putrefaction腐化, and grotesquerie怪诞. 244/P5/L3 她的身架矮小,也许正因为这个缘故,在别的女人身上显得不过是丰满,而她却给人以肥大的感觉。她看上去像长久泡在死水中的一具死尸,肿胀发白。 The suspenseful chronological order In “A Rose for Emily,” Faulkner does not rely on a conventional linear approach to present his characters’ inner lives and motivations. Instead, he fractures, shifts, and manipulates time, stretching the story out over several decades. We learn about Emily’s life through a series of flashbacks(回忆). The story begins with a description of Emily’s funeral and then moves into the near-distant past. At the end of the story, we see that the funeral is a flashback as well, preceding the unsealing of the
