DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 49 (Industrial Inorganic Chemicals) The synthesis of regular coiled carbon nanotubes by Ni-catalyzed pyrolysis of acetylene along with its growth mechanism is reported. Acetone-dissolved acetylene was used as the carbon source, while a small amt. of the co-catalyst PCl3 was added into the acetylene gas before it was introduced into the reactor. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the morphologies of the as-grown coiled carbon nanotubes. Based on the exptl. findings, a new mechanism and its corresponding models are proposed to explain the formation of hollow coiled carbon nanotubes and solid carbon fibers.
