Thermal Treatment of Makino Bamboo and its Utilization

Abstract For the development of a water-resistant and anti-mold makino bamboo household utensils,
the optimum thermal treatment and anti-mold chemical process must be known. Experimental results
revealed that heating makino bamboo utensils (tea-cup and tea-container) at 120 steam for 3 hours and
then dipping in boiling 5% KH-02 water solution for 30 minutes, molds are nearly avoidable and water-
resistance can be attained. The residual mold-resistance chemicals in bamboo utensils can be removed
effectively in boiling water for another 30 minutes. In addition, it becomes evident that coating
polyurethane onto the surface of light brown carbonized bamboo tea-container with Chinese painting on
we devised may enhance the utilization of makino bamboo to some extents.
