Form Theme The themes in this poem are mainly the lack of hope and spiritual guidance in human society, a lack of an emotional outlet to express ideas and opinions, and the meaninglessness of life. Theme The first theme is a lack of spiritual guidance and hope in society. When the narrator says, ”the eyes are not here” the author sees the eyes as spiritual leaders. The second theme of the poem is a lack of an emotional outlet to express ideas and opinions. In the poem, the author quotes “our dried voices…are quiet and meaningless” to indict. State the poem In the first section of the poem, a bunch of Hollow Men are leaning together like scarecrows. Everything about them is dry, including their voices and their bodies. Everything they say and do is meaningless. State the poem In the second section, the hollow man is afraid to look at people who made it to deaths dream kingdom – either Heaven or Hell. The Hollow Men live in a world of broken symbols and images. The third section of the poem describes the setting as barren and filled with cacti and stones. When the Hollow Men feel a desire to kiss someone, they are unable to. Instead, they say prayers to broken stones. State the poem In the fourth section, the hollow continues to describe his vacant, desolate surroundings, in which are no eyes. The Hollow Men are afraid to look at people or to be looked at. State the poem The fifth and final section begins with a nursery rhyme modeled on the song Here we go round the mulberry bush, except instead of a mulberry bush the kiddies are circling a prickly pear cactus. The speaker describes how a shadow has paralyzed all of their activities, so they are unable to act, create, respond, or even exist. by T. S. Eliot Group members: 林 娜 雷 莉 邱燕琼 李维聪 秦梦航 Free Verse The poem has free verse, it doesnt have a regular meter or rhyme scheme. The poem is almost like a speech or a dramatic monologue delivered by a character, the character being all of the Hollow Me
