* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Emphysema Disease where the lungs lose their ability to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen effectively. Caused by- Smoking, developing over many years Signs and Symptoms SOB Coughing (harsh), cyanosis, or high fever In advanced cases present with restlessness, confusion, and weakness Hyperventilation Occurs when the body’s rapid breathing upsets the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. Triggered by Fear/anxiety Head injury/severe bleeding/illness Asthma Exercise Hyperventilation causes the carbon dioxide level in the blood to decrease. The lower level of carbon dioxide reduces blood flow to the brain, which may result in the following nervous system and emotional complaints: Dizziness, confusion, agitation, Other Signs and Symptoms Deep, rapid breathing Numbness in finger/toes due to changes in the carbon dioxide level in the brain (decreased levels) Anaphylaxis A condition affecting the immune system’s ability to eliminate foreign materials such as bacteria and viral particles. A series of reactions cause swelling or narrowing of the air passages, restricting the ability to breath Triggered by- Food Insect stings Drugs Other Anaphylaxis Itching (of tongue, armpits, groin or any part of the body). Weakness, dizziness or confusion. Swelling of the face, throat or tongue or any part of the body. Rash or hives. Nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting. Tight feeling in the chest and throat. Difficulty breathing/wheezing. Low blood pressure. Shock. Difficulty swallowing. Red, watery eyes. Rapid heart rate. Sudden collapse or cardiac arrest. Unconsciousness and death, which might occur if anaphylactic shock is not treated. Anaphylaxis Treatment EpiPen? and EpiPen? Jr (0.3 and 0.15 mg epinephrine) Auto-Injectors are indicated for emergency treatment of allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) for people with a history of an anaphylactic reaction.
