Analysis of hyperintensity of the globus pallidus on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images in newborns

[Abstract] Objective To explore the causes of symmetric hyperintensity of the globus pallidus on T1-weighted (T1WI) magnetic resonance images in newborns. Methods The brain magnetic resonance images of 427 cases of neonates were reviewed, and the T1WI signal patterns of the globus pallidus were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate contributions of the clinical factors to the hyperintensity of globus pallidus on T1WI. The signal intensity ratio of globus pallidus to cerebral cortex was compared with the total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels and the postnatal age at examination. Results T1WI hyperintensity of the globus pallidus was found in 249 of 427cases (58.3%). Logistic regression analysis showed that hyperbilirubinemia is a major factor of the hyperintensity of the globus pallidus on T1WI (OR=5.915, P0.001). With increasing of the TSB level, the signal intensity ratio of the globus pallidus to the cerebral cortex increased, with the difference statistically significant (χ2=84.734, P0.001). Correlation analysis showed that the signal intensity ratio of the globus pallidus to the cerebral cortex was negatively correlated with postnatal age at MRI examination (r=-0.441, P0.001). Conclusion Hyperbilirubinemia is a main factor contributing to the T1WI hyperintensity of globus pallidus in newborns. However, t
