Type of Question Description Example Open Requires more than a “yes” or “no” answer Stimulates thinking. Elicits discussion Usually begins with “what,” “How”, “When,” “Why” “What ideas do you have for explaining these changes to our employees?” Closed Requires a one-word answer. Closes off discussion. Usually begins with “is,” “can,” “how many,” “does”. “Does everyone understand the changes we’ve discussed?” IF YOU WANT TO... THEN Stimulate thinking of all present Allow voluntary response Avoid putting an individual on the spot. Direct the question to the group. Example: “What experiences have you had on this issue?” Stimulate one individual to think and respond. Tap the known resources of an “expert” in the class. Direct the question to that individual. Example: “Mary, you have had a lot of experience in applying these regulations with clients. What would you do in this case?” 2. LURE THEM People are mainly interested in themselves –so state clearly what’s in it for them! Use the same tactic as a fisherman –bait 1.
