The things that are hallmarks of the IBM culture are captured in the commitments employees make every year to the company, and every day to themselves and one another. ? More than just nice-sounding words, these commitments stem directly from IBMs business strategies. They influence how employees reach decisions and then act on them, how they prioritize their days and spend their valuable time. Every year employees write their Personal Business Commitments (PBCs). PBCs start with senior management and cascade throughout the company so that all employees have a common focus. Employees are evaluated annually by their immediate manager on the extent to which they achieve their personal business commitments, measured by their business results and demonstrated behaviors. Their annual assessment has an impact on employees’ base pay and bonus compensation, as well as whether they will be eligible for job growth and other career opportunities. ? As part of this process, employees create individual development plans in partnership with their managers. These plans specify which skills need to be improved before qualifying for future opportunities, as well as what learning activities they should participate in to gain higher levels of expertise. ? Collaboration tools allow employees to tap into the company brain trust by reaching out to their peers and building a professional network. ? SameTime (instant messaging) is a popular application that allows employees to send and receive text messages in real-time to and from anyone else on the IBM network.
