Beliefs about Language Teaching as a Profession Beliefs about Language Teaching as a Profession What is profession? Profession: a job that needs a high level of education and training. Language teaching is not universally regarded as a profession, that is , as having unique characteristics, as requiring specialized skills and training, as being a lifelong and valued career choice, and as offering a high level of job satisfaction. The degree to which individual teachers have a sense of professionalism about their work depends upon their own working conditions, their personal goals and attitudes, and career prospects available to language teachers in their community. pros In the survey by Richards et al.(1991), English language teachers reported their belief about language teaching: language teaching is a profession and teachers engaged in it are professionals. they are willing to assume professional responsibilities, they can take charge of their teaching, pros they can take charge of their teaching, they can improve the learning outcomes of their students. They shared a common view toward the language they teach, stressing its value and importance in their community for education, career, and business communications. cons Other teachers do not think of teaching as a profession at all. Terry….. Insists it is a job, not a calling, with fixed limits of time and emotional involvement. That does not stop him from feeling a strong sense of solidarity with other teachers, and being a firm supporter of the teachers’ union. At the end of the spectrum, the image of teaching is rather more like a skilled trade than a learned profession. How to be professional? Bartlett sees the key to professionalism in teaching as centering on giving teachers the means to better understand their own classroom practices. Lewis(1989) argues that greater attention to accountability is needed to support language teachers’ claim to professionalism. How to be professional? W
