Course Purpose
It is common at professional meetings to hear practitioners say to their academic colleagues: Why don’t you teach your graduate students to write instead of expecting us to teach them on the job? A similar refrain can be heard by instructors in graduate programs like ours. These instructors bemoan the poor quality of writing in the classroom and blame educators in high schools and undergraduate programs for not teaching writing well enough, or worse, not teaching it at all.
The buck has to stop somewhere. While impossible to totally erase the failures of the past, it is the aim of this course to assist a few graduate students each year to perform measurably better as writers in the classroom and later in the workplace.
For some students, this course is remedial. It can be a significant help to students struggling to overcome the neglect of writing in their earlier education. It can prepare them to cope more successfully with the writing demands they are sure to face in the classroom and on-the-job.
The course also can help students who have reached graduate school with good writing skills. For them, the course is an opportunity to excel in classroom writing assignments. It can be counted on to add value to these students as working professionals seeking to move ahead successfully in their careers.
Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
Show improvement in knowledge of writing fundamentals related to course content of at least 75% based on a comparison of results from a start-of-course self-assessment with results of an end-of-course self-assessment.
