The protection of ocean resources proves one of the key words of our time. As is ironically demonstrated in the drawings above, in the sea sails only one fishing boat, with countless fishes alive in the picture of 1900. However, in the picture of 1996, with a huge number of boats covering the sea, only one single fish survives the catastrophe. Seemingly simple as the drawings are, they serve as an impressive reminder of the symbolic meaning that we should attach tremendous concern to ocean resources. On one hand, it is the desire for the short-term economic interest or the chance of making an unexpected discovery that lures human beings fish excessively. On the other hand, much as we may pride ourselves on our remarkably commercial achievement, we feel obliged to face the pressing problems (ocean resources degradation even the extinction of certain ocean species), for it is a matter of our existence. To sum up, there is something we can do with regard to tackling this sort of problem. For one thing, governments should issue strict laws and regulations in order to control the commercial fishing. For another, people had better be further educated to increase their awareness of prizing the value of these precious resources.
