Vu lnerab ility becomes a theme in disaster research and is gradually integrated in the sustainable development strate- gy. A fter review ing the progress of vu lnerab ility research at home and abroad, this paper briefly describes the process of vu lnerability origin and development, includes the conceptions and framew orks of the glossary and sum- marizes risk-hazard model, pressure-and-release mode,l political-economy mode,l integrated model and resilience model on vu lnerability assessm ent in several fields. There are threemain m ethods in the vu lnerability assessm ent a- bout natural d isasters. That is h istorical disaster data basedmethod, ind icator system basedmethod and investiga- tion-based disaster loss rate curve method. In the future, interd isciplinary cooperation, mu lt-i scale objects integra- tion and the compositive use of severalm ethods are the trendency in vu lnerability study. W e ami at finding the or-i gin of vu lnerab ility in the human society and providing effective basis for insurance and decision-mak ing of govern- ments.
