China (450052) E-mail: maopingsong@ Abstract A series of novel N-5-ferrocenylisophthalic amino acid methyl esters 3a-b were prepared via directly condensation reactions of 5-ferrocenylisophthalic dichloride to the amino acid methyl esters. The compounds were fully characterized by a range of NMR spectroscopic techniques, mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and cyclic voltammetry. The CV curves of compounds 3a-b showed quasi-reversible redox behavior similar to the Fc/Fc+ redox couple, and electrochemical anions binding studies of 3a-b revealed that it has good ability in recognizing of various anions. Further, 1H NMR anion complexation studies of 3a-b with F- and H PO - strongly suggest the contribution of amide CONH protons and Ar-H 2 4 of isophthalyl as the hydrogen donors in anion binding in CDCl3 solution.
