Abstract Tostudythebehaviorofoverlyingstrataandthe1ikelihoodofwaterimushandquicksandwithdifferentmining
sequencesunderanunconsolidatedalluvium aquifer,anumericalmodelbasedonhtefluid—solidcouplingtheory wascon--
structedbyFLAC .Simulationresultsrevealedthattheminingsequenceshadasignificantinfluenceontheseepage,dis—
placementandfailurecharacteristicsofhteoverlyingstrata.Inthiskindofgeologicalandhydrogeologicalconditions,the
workfaceclosetohteoutcropofcoalseam easilysuffersfrom waterimu shnadquicksandduringmining.Inthesimulationre-
sults.theplasticzone.verticaldisplacementandporewaterpressureinhteoverlyingstrataoftheworkfacedecreasemoreor
lessusingtheupwardminingsequencethanusingthedownwardminingsequence.Therefore,theapplicationoftheupward
miningsequenceintheprocessofminingispreferentialtopreventwaterimu shandquicksand.
