In gene al the effective se vice time of existing highways cannot each the designed se vice life, so the ea ly damages such as la gea ea uts, c acks, bleedings and potholes, etc. f equently appea within 2~ 3 yea s afte being open to t affic. On the cont ast, the designed se vice life of asphalt pavements ab oad becomes longe and longe , thus the design concept of pe manent o longlife pavement eme ges, which acqui es g eat success in p olonging the se vice life of the asphalt pavement. Based on the investigations on typical st uctu es of some ab oad asphalt pavements, this pape ca ies out the p elimina y p obe into the design concept of pe manent asphalt pavement.
